Cryoablation for breast cancer
A minimally invasive alternative to surgery for selected patients
Precise freezing of tumors without major surgery
Cryoablation is an innovative, minimally invasive procedure in which cancerous tissue is destroyed by freezing the tumor at extremely cold temperatures. For carefully selected breast cancer patients, cryoablation can be a gentle alternative to conventional surgery with minimal scarring and short recovery times.
What is cryoablation?
Cryoablation is an image-guided treatment in which tumor tissue is frozen and destroyed using a thin probe.
During the procedure:
- a small, needle-like probe is inserted into the tumor
- Extremely cold temperatures create an “ice ball”
- If the cancer cells are destroyed while the surrounding tissue is spared as much as possible
- The treated tissue is gradually absorbed by the body over time
Cryoablation is usually performed under imaging guidance such as ultrasound, CT or MRI.
Why patients consider cryoablation for breast cancer
Possible advantages
- Minimally invasive treatment
- No large surgical incisions
- Minimal scarring
- Breast-conserving approach
- Short recovery time
- Can often be performed on an outpatient basis
- Less physical strain compared to surgery
- May be suitable for selected patients who are not ideal candidates for surgery
Which breast cancer patients are eligible?
Cryoablation is generally considered for the following cases:
- Small, localized breast tumors
- Early stage breast cancer
- Selected hormone receptor-positive tumors
- Patients looking for minimally invasive treatment options
- Patients who may not tolerate surgery well
Suitability depends on:
- Tumor size and localization
- Imaging findings
- Lymph node infestation
- Tumor biology
- General state of health
A multidisciplinary medical assessment is essential.
How the process works
Step 1 - Assessment
Your medical reports and imaging results are carefully reviewed by specialists.
Step 2 - Treatment planning
An individual treatment plan is drawn up based on the tumor characteristics and the patient's goals.
Step 3 - Image-guided cryoablation
The tumor is precisely targeted under imaging guidance, while the cancer cells are destroyed by controlled freezing.
Step 4 - Recovery and aftercare
For most patients, the recovery time is short and they continue to receive structured aftercare with imaging examinations and oncological care.
Combination of cryoablation with modern oncology
Cryoablation can be integrated with:
- Hormone therapy
- Radiotherapy
- Immunotherapy concepts
- Integrative oncological care
- Personalized aftercare strategies
Research is currently underway into the potential immunological effects of freezing tumors.
